Mid century vanity mirror in a minimalist industrial design comprised of brass coated round frame with a black coated metal tulip base.
This design has been attributed to Robert Welsh and Owen F Thomas. With paper label on back 'Made in England Durlston designs ltd Hersham Surrey'
Durlston sticker is still present on the back of the mirror, albeit with some damage.
-Measures-
Diameter (mirror + frame): 26cm | 34cm height | base 12.5cn ø
-Notes-
The mirror is in good vintage condition however there is a knock to frame (refer to photos ), some light scatch marks, the back has aged and has some rust spotting near the base, the black base has light traces of use (barely noticeable surface blemishes).
All points to note and nothing that we feel hugely detracts from this stylish piece.
-About-
Durlston Designs
-made an array of modernist in the 1960s and are best known for their adjustable table mirrors . Produced in various sizes mostly in brushed steel or white / black coated metal.
The bases vary either; double pronged horizontals, angle, tulip base, three pronged, and swivel with some versions on marble
The USA market prizes these (rightly) where you can expect to pay up to $1000 for a good example.
The quality of construction and finish would be very expensive to buy new today, making these classics a bargain for any design conscious interior.
They have a design influence taken from Danish mid century designers Jacobsen or Quistgaard. Durlston Designs was based out of Hersham in Surrey and British manufacturing was as specialised in industrial design which should be celebrated and the range of mirrors produced here are valued by collectors worldwide.
Owen F Thomas / Robert Welch
These mirrors are often wrongly described as being by Robert Welch or in association with.
Referencing Welch's book 'Hand and Eye' there is no mention of him working for Durlston in his book.
Often products are wrongly associated and we believe that Owen F Thomas should be credited and that Durlston pieces are well made design objects in their own right.
